About this title
Synopsis
Luke Ferrell builds engines in a cinder block shop off the interstate. He used to drive for a crew in his twenties, and the only thing he took from that life was a promise to his father never to do it again. At eleven at night his brother Danny calls from the road. He borrowed the Judge's 1969 Chevelle for a joyride, and the Judge wants it back by sunrise with every dent unmade. Luke has a loaner pickup, a toolbox and a map. Danny has a cracked head gasket, a flat out lead foot and two crews behind him who each think the car is theirs.
Who this is about
Luke Ferrell is thirty-three, builds race engines for a living, and hasn't driven fast on a public road since he promised his late father he was done with it.
What goes wrong
His younger brother borrowed a rebuilt 1969 muscle car that belongs to a man who collects debts, and it is now loose on the interstate with the brother inside.
What's at stake
If the car is not back in the collector's garage by dawn, the collector takes the shop Luke's father left him and the brother goes with it.
Why it keeps going
Four hundred miles, a cracked head gasket, two crews closing from behind, and a promise to a dead man that gets harder to keep every mile marker.
Takeaway
A promise is worth what it costs you to break it, and Luke is about to find out.
