About this title
Synopsis
Jesse Cardwell has one airplane, a grass strip and a promise he made to a deputy: if the witness ever needs to go anywhere, Jesse will fly him. He assumed nobody would ever ask. At dusk, the deputy does. The courthouse is ninety miles away and the roads are watched. Jesse's biplane stalls below fifty-five and tops out under a hundred. The trucks behind them do not have those limits. Between the strip and the courthouse are the power lines, the county line and a front of black cloud, and Jesse flies low under all of it.
Who this is about
Jesse Cardwell is twenty-eight, flies a 1962 crop duster out of a grass strip in Kansas, and has been late for nothing in his life, including his own father's funeral.
What goes wrong
A witness hiding at a neighbor's farm needs to reach the county courthouse by eight tomorrow, and the roads are watched by two trucks full of armed men.
What's at stake
Flying means a ninety mile an hour aircraft and one pass over open country. Driving means being found. Refusing means the witness never testifies and Jesse keeps his quiet life.
Why it keeps going
A two seat plane that stalls below fifty-five, a grid of power lines, fuel for one flight, and a storm front closing in from the west.
Takeaway
Being a small man with a small plane doesn't change what you gave your word to do.
