About this title
Synopsis
Wade Pruitt has written four hundred speeding tickets and never once raced anyone. His cousin Boone has raced everyone and never been ticketed. The fire station needs forty thousand dollars. The race pays forty thousand. The sheriff is already warming up his truck. Wade puts the badge in the glove box and tells Boone to shut up and drive.
Who this is about
Wade Pruitt is thirty, a deputy sheriff in Jasper County, Georgia, and his cousin Boone is twenty-seven, a mechanic with a 1970 muscle car and no sense of consequence.
What goes wrong
The county is about to lose its volunteer fire department unless somebody raises forty thousand dollars by Sunday, and the only prize that large is the old drag race the sheriff pretends not to know about.
What's at stake
If Wade enters the race, he loses his badge. If Boone enters alone, he loses the car. If they sit out, the fire station closes.
Why it keeps going
A muscle car with a bad transmission, a deputy trying to look innocent, a sheriff with a very fast truck and a town that knows exactly what is going on.
Takeaway
Family means showing up with the car and the nerve and figuring the rest out later.
