Synopsis
Claire Bettancourt teaches French and German to fourteen-year-olds. She has a husband named Theo, a flat on the Marienstrasse, and a mortgage with nineteen years left on it. All of it is real. None of it was supposed to be. Six years ago she was given a word and told she would most likely never hear it. She built a life in the space that promise opened. She was good at building it. She stopped counting years ago. On a Tuesday in March a man on the eight-fifteen platform says the word, does not break stride, and is gone before the train. Theo is expecting her home at six. She has until then to decide who she is.

Claire Bettancourt teaches languages at a girls' school, is married four years, and has a mortgage. None of it was supposed to become true, and all of it did.
What goes wrong
A man on the eight-fifteen platform says one word to her in passing. It is a word she was given six years ago and told she would probably never hear.
What's at stake
The work is real and the reason for it is good. So is the life, and the life does not survive the work. She cannot keep both and both are hers.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is one more small betrayal of a person who has done nothing wrong, performed by a woman who is very good at it and getting worse at forgiving herself.
