Synopsis
Three men have proved up on this quarter section and not one of them lasted a second winter. Anders Vold knows their names. The land office told him, which he took at the time for a kindness. He has five years to prove the claim and one season of seed, and a wife who came out from Trondheim on the strength of a letter he now wishes he had written more carefully. In the last week of April the well comes in, and the water is salt.
