Sodbuster

Synopsis

Three men have proved up on this quarter section and not one of them lasted a second winter. Anders Vold knows their names. The land office told him, which he took at the time for a kindness. He has five years to prove the claim and one season of seed, and a wife who came out from Trondheim on the strength of a letter he now wishes he had written more carefully. In the last week of April the well comes in, and the water is salt.

Five years of work, a wife who came out from Trondheim on the strength of his letter, and no second claim available anywhere.

Why it keeps going

Each episode the land takes one more thing and offers one more good reason to file the abandonment.

Takeaway
