Synopsis
Nobody in this county calls it a curfew. There is no ordinance, no sign, and no penalty. There is simply the fact that between April and October the roads are empty forty minutes after sundown, and that this has been true since before anybody currently living was born. Deputy Ellis Mowat has been here five months. He has been told to get home before dark by sixteen separate people, all of them kindly, none of them twice. On the fourth of August a man is found in a field at dawn, and the report is written before the coroner arrives.
