About this title
Synopsis
Ferriday Technical College is closing programs by the numbers, and welding is on the list. Abelard Quist has taught there nineteen years and has eleven students this term, which is one more than he has booths for. The dean's terms are arithmetic. Eight of the eleven pass the six G pipe certification in May, or the shop becomes storage. The statewide pass rate on a first attempt is thirty-eight percent. Quist has fourteen weeks, a cutting table, and eleven people who signed up because it was the last idea any of them had. He has never in nineteen years taught toward a test. He starts Monday.
Who this is about
Abelard Quist has taught welding at Ferriday Technical for nineteen years, and this semester he has eleven students, one more than he has booths, and no assistant.
What goes wrong
The dean sets the terms as arithmetic. Eight of the eleven clear the six G pipe certification in May, or the shop closes and the equipment is sold.
What's at stake
Eight passes keeps the only trade program within ninety miles open. Seven sends eleven people back to the jobs they took the class to get out of.
Why it keeps going
Every week is another position and another set of coupons cut open and read, and a student who was clean on Tuesday can come apart on the overhead pass Thursday.
Takeaway
A hard test is only cruel when nobody has bothered to teach toward it.
