About this title
Synopsis
The short go is the final round, when the best riders in the region draw their last horse. Colt Redfern has made it for the first time in four years, on a shoulder held together with tape and stubbornness. He needs a qualified score to cover the ranch note. The chute draw gives him Cinder, a bay gelding with six years of unridden Saturdays behind him. His father is in the stands with the bank letter folded in his shirt pocket. Colt sits down on the horse and nods for the gate.
Who this is about
Colt Redfern, twenty-eight, rides saddle broncs out of Sheridan, Wyoming, with a left shoulder that has been dislocated four times and a ranch note due on the first.
What goes wrong
He draws Cinder, a bay gelding that has bucked off every rider for six years, in the final round of the regional finals.
What's at stake
A qualified ride pays the note. A wreck means surgery, no season next year and the ranch listed in spring.
Why it keeps going
Eight seconds, a shoulder that will not hold, a crowd that has stopped hoping, and a horse that has never lost.
Takeaway
You do not have to beat the horse. You have to stay on for eight seconds.
