Synopsis
The satellites cannot see through the cloud. That is the entire reason there are six men on the ground at seventy-two degrees north, walking into a valley to confirm with their eyes what nobody can confirm from orbit. They carry four days of rations, which is one more than the plan calls for, and the plan was written by people who have been right about this before. On the second night the same weather that hides the target closes the sky behind them. The forecast, when it finally comes through on a signal too weak to answer, gives them nine days.
