Synopsis
Nora Chastain signed the validation because the chief of pathology asked her to and because she needed his letter. The panel went live in March. It took her forty minutes and she read every page. In April four patients come back with the same rare marker. They share no diagnosis, no family, no ward. All four are now scheduled for the same operation with the same surgeon. She raises it four times. Then the calls stop being returned. Reporting it outside the building means putting her own name at the top of the document, on a form she signed and nobody made her sign.

Nora Chastain is a histotechnologist who validated a new immunostain panel for the chief of pathology, partly as a favor and partly because she needed the recommendation letter.

Within a month four unrelated patients return the same rare result, all four are booked for the same operation, and every physician she raises it with stops answering her.
What's at stake
Her signature is on the validation. Taking this outside the hospital hands them a scapegoat with the paperwork already prepared, and four people are on a surgical schedule.
