About this title
Synopsis
The Kestrel Gap relay is one woman, a dish the size of a field and a great deal of quiet. Noor Haddad passes messages between the colony at Tamsin and everyone else. She has six weeks left on her rotation and a list of things to eat when she gets home. Then the dish picks up a hail on a frequency nobody has used since before she was born. It is the Aurelian, a colony ship lost forty-one years ago, with four thousand sleepers aboard, asking for a course home. Plotting it means turning the dish away from Tamsin for nine days, in storm season. The governor says no. The hail repeats every hour.
Who this is about
Noor Haddad keeps the Kestrel Gap relay alone on an eighteen month rotation, passing messages between a struggling colony and everyone else, with six weeks left before she goes home.
What goes wrong
A colony ship lost forty-one years ago hails the relay asking for a course home, and plotting it means turning the station's dish away from the colony for nine days.
What's at stake
Answer, and four thousand sleepers on the lost ship get home. Refuse, and the colony keeps its only link through the worst storm season in its short history.
Why it keeps going
The ship can hold position for twelve days, the colony governor has ordered her not to turn the dish, and the hail repeats every hour in a very tired voice.
Takeaway
Some duties are owed to the people in front of you, and some to the people who were lost first.
