About this title
Synopsis
Denny and Gus have a rule. They do not argue with debtors, they do not go through a fence, and they are out of the driveway in ninety seconds. Tonight the list has ten cars and a bonus for all ten. The first three go smoothly. The fourth belongs to retired Colonel Harlan Voss, who keeps an Army half-track in the garage and a hand-lettered sign that says NO SOLICITORS, NO REPOSSESSORS, NO SURVIVORS. It is a joke. Denny is almost sure it is a joke. Gus is already backing the truck up the drive.
Who this is about
Denny Pike, thirty-three, and his cousin Gus Lindahl, twenty-nine, run a two truck repossession outfit out of Tulsa and have never once taken the wrong car, until tonight.
What goes wrong
The fourth name on the list is a man who still owns a restored Army half-track, and who treats the driveway as a front line.
What's at stake
Missing a car means missing the rent on the lot. Taking this one means going up a driveway with the only two men in town who have never won a fight.
Why it keeps going
Ten cars, one night, a dying tow truck, a dispatcher who gives wrong addresses and a colonel who does not recognize a ceasefire.
Takeaway
Some jobs are impossible, and the only way through is to be too stubborn to know.
