Synopsis
Bethel Rise went under in 1948 when the Corps closed the gates, and the county has told the same story ever since: everyone moved on to Tulsa and Little Rock and the coast. Nobody ever wrote down a name. A drought drops the water forty feet and gives Ivy Renner one season. She grew up ten miles from here. She filed the permit, and she left off the page where her aunt objected in writing. The graveyard opens on a Tuesday. By Thursday the crew has stopped working after dark, because something in the pit is keeping time, and Ivy has to decide whether the county gets to hear it too.
Who this is about
Dr. Ivy Renner is a field archaeologist who grew up ten miles from the reservoir that drowned Bethel Rise, and who filed the permit to open its graveyard herself.
What goes wrong
She left a descendant's written objection out of the application. The objection was her aunt's. Two days into the dig, singing starts coming up out of the open ground.
What's at stake
A hundred and nine people were buried here and none were ever reported missing. Naming them ends the county's founding story, her aunt's peace, and Ivy's license.
Why it keeps going
Each episode raises one more grave, one more name, and one more living family in the county who would rather the water came back up and stayed there.
