About this title
Synopsis
In Parch Flats the creek has been dry since spring, and the only thing still running is Amos Teague's bench lathe. He has fixed every rifle in the county and kept his opinions to himself. A stranger leaves one with a cracked stock and asks for it by Friday. The barrel is one Amos cut himself, three winters ago, for the county sheriff. The sheriff has not been seen since. Amos has three days, a town that has stopped asking questions and a promise he made to every customer: that he would never make a gun he was ashamed of.
Who this is about
Amos Teague, thirty-one, keeps the only gun shop between the Gila and the border, repairs what is broken and has never asked a customer what it was for.
What goes wrong
A stranger leaves a rifle with a cracked stock and an unusual barrel, and Amos realizes he built the barrel himself three years ago for a sheriff.
What's at stake
The sheriff vanished the same winter. Telling the town means naming the man who is paying him. Fixing it means arming whoever came for the sheriff.
Why it keeps going
Three days to the stranger's return, a rifle that will not fire true, a town with no rain and a sheriff nobody can find.
Takeaway
A man who makes a thing is answerable for what it is used for.
