Synopsis
Alma Reyes takes things back. Cars, mostly. Equipment. Sometimes a container that is not on any manifest. Her clients are people who cannot go to a judge, which is why the work pays, and she has never once asked what she was carrying. The order says a dead garment factory in Vernon, third floor, freight elevator, two in the morning. Alma has done eleven jobs in that building. This is the first time the elevator has been locked from the inside. There is a woman on the other side of it. She knows Alma's name. She says she has been told the driver always comes at two, and asks whether Alma is going to keep standing there.
Who this is about
Alma Reyes repossesses things for people who cannot go to court about them. She works nights, she works alone, and she has never once asked what a thing is.
What goes wrong
The address on the order is a dead garment factory in Vernon. What is behind the freight elevator is a person, and the person is expecting her.
What's at stake
Delivering the load pays her rent and ends someone. Walking out with her instead breaks the only rule that keeps Alma employable, and puts both of them on the same list.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is another order she is not supposed to read, and another night deciding whether not asking still counts as not knowing, in a city where possession really is nine tenths of everything.
