About this title
Synopsis
Wyatt Spence has his father's number on the door and his father's setup in the springs. The car is the only thing in the shop the bank hasn't tagged. Championship night at the Cardinal Valley half mile starts wet. In the middle of the feature, a flat tire sends him to the pits and a lap down. Nine laps remain. The leader has not been passed in four months. The track is drying out and the clay is turning to a groove only one driver can read. The borrowed engine has maybe eight laps in it. Wyatt needs to catch nine.
Who this is about
Wyatt Spence is twenty-four, from a small Ohio town, and drives the late model his father built and never got to race a full season in before he died.
What goes wrong
He enters the championship night one lap down after a flat tire, on a half mile of wet clay where passing is hard and the leader has been unbeatable all year.
What's at stake
Winning wins the season and saves his father's shop from the bank. Losing means a good night's work on a track where nobody remembers second place.
Why it keeps going
Nine laps, one lap to make up, a clay surface drying out by the minute, and a car with a borrowed engine that won't last more than eight.
Takeaway
Some races are won on the night, and some were won years earlier in a garage.
