About this title
Synopsis
Ray Kowalski has never lost a round. In eleven years running the arms room at the reserve center he has been short a single cleaning rod, and he wrote himself up for it. On a quiet Sunday inventory the count comes out one over. The extra rifle is clean and oiled, and its serial number belongs to a weapon Ray watched go through the crusher. By noon someone has changed the visitor log. By dusk a major he has never met is asking, very politely, how long he plans to be in the building.
Who this is about
Staff Sergeant Ray Kowalski, thirty-six, runs the arms room at a reserve center outside Toledo and signs for every weapon himself, twice.
What goes wrong
During a Sunday inventory he finds one rifle too many, with the serial of a weapon he personally watched crushed in 2024.
What's at stake
Reporting it brings the people who put it there. Staying quiet means it leaves the building on a drill weekend in the hands of whoever signs it out next.
Why it keeps going
A locked cage, three hundred weapons, a drill weekend starting at dawn, and a visitor log that someone has started rewriting.
Takeaway
The man who counts things is the one nobody plans for.
