About this title
Synopsis
Lock and Dam Nine moves four boats a week in a good season. Opal Terhune works it anyway, alone in a stone house above the gates, and writes every passage in a green ledger the federal government stopped reading years ago. At two in the morning a towboat comes down with one covered barge and no radio call. The pilot hands two hundred dollars through the window and asks her to lose an hour. She logs it. By noon a well dressed man is on her porch, admiring the house and asking whether the ledger is the only copy. The water is dropping. The lock closes in eleven days.
Who this is about
Opal Terhune tends Lock and Dam Nine alone, logs every hull that passes, and has kept the book in the same careful hand for twenty-three years on a river nobody uses anymore.
What goes wrong
At two in the morning a tow pushes a single covered barge through without a radio call, and the pilot tips her two hundred dollars to lose the hour it took.
What's at stake
Keeping the entry puts her in the way of whoever loaded that barge. Tearing it out makes her the reason nobody can ever prove it passed.
Why it keeps going
The river is falling, the lock closes for the season in eleven days, and the stranger keeps coming back with friendlier questions about her book and her habits.
Takeaway
A small job done honestly is still the only thing standing between some people and what they want.
