About this title
Synopsis
The Kodiak crew calls Wes Tolliver the Landlord because he never gives up the hover. He is twenty-nine and has pulled sixty-three people out of the Gulf of Alaska. Tonight a crabber named the Marguerite Anne is taking water forty miles out, with eleven men aboard and a gale on top of them. The fog is down at forty feet. The fuel gauge says one approach. His flight mechanic says it out loud so nobody else has to: nobody would blame them for turning around. Wes tells the crew to get the basket ready.
Who this is about
Lieutenant Wes Tolliver, twenty-nine, flies a rescue helicopter out of Kodiak and has a standing bet with his crew that he will never need a second approach.
What goes wrong
A crabber loses power forty miles out in a gale with eleven men aboard, and the fog sits on the water at forty feet.
What's at stake
Turning back is the book answer and nobody would blame him. Going in means flying a hoist hover at night on instruments with a deck that will not stay still.
Why it keeps going
Fuel for one pass, a swimmer in the door, a pitching deck and a radio altimeter that has started to lie.
Takeaway
The brave part is not the flying. It is staying on the line with men who cannot see you yet.
