About this title
Synopsis
Doran School has sixty-one students from kindergarten to twelfth grade, and its quiz team is three kids and the chemistry teacher. Mr. Koroma started it to fill an elective. They practice with a buzzer he wired from a doorbell. Then they win regionals, mostly because two other schools got snowed in. The trophy is the first one in the case since 1988. State is in six weeks. The other teams have benches, matching sweatshirts and coaches who do nothing else. Doran has a farm kid who knows every capital, a girl who reads the encyclopedia at lunch, and a boy who only signed up for the bus ride.
Who this is about
Abel Koroma teaches chemistry, civics and driver education at a school in Doran with sixty-one students, and coaches its three person quiz team because nobody else would.
What goes wrong
His three, a farm kid, a girl who reads the encyclopedia for fun and a boy who only came for the bus trip, win regionals by accident and qualify for state.
What's at stake
At state they face schools with forty students on the bench and paid coaches, and the district has already said it will not pay for a second trip.
Why it keeps going
Six weeks to learn what the other schools learned in six years, a buzzer wired from a doorbell, and a bracket that puts the defending champion in round one.
Takeaway
A team that knows it should lose has one advantage, which is that nobody is watching it.
