About this title
Synopsis
The outpost at the head of the valley is being given up tonight, and the cargo plane on its gravel strip is the last one coming. Captain Renata Solis has flown forty evacuations out of here. She has never come back to the plane with fewer patients than she was sent for. The aircraft is packed with wounded from the morning. There is room for one more litter. On the strip are two. A nineteen year old private with a chest wound, and the sergeant who carried him down the ridge with a wound of his own. Both are awake. The pilot is counting minutes out loud, and he will stop at eleven.
Who this is about
Captain Renata Solis is a flight nurse with forty evacuation flights out of a mountain outpost, and she has never left behind a patient she was sent to bring home.
What goes wrong
On the last flight before the outpost is abandoned, a cargo plane lands with one litter position left and two critically wounded soldiers waiting on the strip.
What's at stake
Whoever she chooses is with a good surgeon in two hours. Whoever she leaves waits for a convoy that has to drive out through the valley at night.
Why it keeps going
The plane has eleven minutes on the ground before the strip comes under fire, the pilot will not wait for a twelfth, and both men are awake and can hear her.
Takeaway
Triage is the word for the moment a decent person is made to choose, and then has to live with it.
