Synopsis
There is a gravel strip north of everything, four hours of dark in each direction, and a man who has kept it alone for eleven months. Technical Sergeant Aaron Vail has an envelope, a checklist, and a signature block of four names. The names belong to men who wrote it in 1961 and are all dead now, and what they wrote has never been rescinded, because nobody left alive remembers it well enough to rescind it. On a night in November 1983 the conditions are met, for the first time in twenty-two years. The radio gives him nothing. The checklist gives him everything, and asks him to believe that men twenty-two years gone knew what tonight would look like.
Who this is about
Technical Sergeant Aaron Vail is the only American on a gravel airstrip above the Arctic Circle, keeper of a sealed contingency written in 1961 by four men who are now dead.
What goes wrong
In November 1983 the conditions in the envelope are met, exactly, for the first time in twenty-two years. The world that wrote them no longer exists in any recognizable form.
What's at stake
The order is lawful, current, and never rescinded. Following it commits aircraft. Refusing it means one sergeant on a gravel strip has decided he understands 1961 better than 1961 did.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is another hour of no contact with anyone above him, another item on the checklist completed, and another reason the men who signed it might have been right.
