About this title
Synopsis
The exosuit hasn't left its rack in four years. Reid Calloway is one of six riggers trained to wear it, and the only one still on shift when the fuel line lets go. Two hundred workers are trapped under the collapsed ventilation deck of Shaft Two. The company manager wants a review. The suit carries four at a time, with twenty minutes of coolant before it starts cooking whoever is inside. Reid does the arithmetic before he suits up. It does not come out the way he wants. He puts the helmet on and takes the elevator down.
Who this is about
Reid Calloway is thirty-six, a rescue rigger on the Tarsis mining colony, and one of six people trained to wear the old exosuit that nobody has used in a real fire.
What goes wrong
A fuel line ignites in the main shaft during shift change and traps two hundred workers below a collapsed ventilation deck.
What's at stake
The suit can carry four people at a time on a twenty minute coolant supply. The math lets him save most of them and not all of them, and he has to choose.
Why it keeps going
Twenty minutes of coolant per trip, a collapsing deck, a shaft growing hotter by the hour, and a company manager telling him over the radio to wait for orders.
Takeaway
Rescue is arithmetic until the moment it isn't, and then it is just a man going back down.
