About this title
Synopsis
The unregistered half of Kessring Ring has six hundred residents, no inspectors, no registry, and no government anywhere willing to say out loud that it is there. The rent is very reasonable. Imelda Vaross welds the structural arc that holds it together, which makes her one of about four people who understand how thin the margin actually is. She has never felt the need to mention this. Then an arc snaps loose and takes forty meters of habitat spine with it. Nobody is coming and nobody is liable, and six hundred people turn around and look at the welder, who is the only one of them who knows what it will cost.
Who this is about
Imelda Vaross welds structural arc on the half of Kessring Ring that no government admits exists. Six hundred neighbors, no registry, no inspectors, and rent that is refreshingly honest about itself.
What goes wrong
Her arc snaps loose and takes out forty meters of habitat spine. Nobody is coming, nobody is liable, and the only people who can fix it are the ones living in it.
What's at stake
Air, water and forty meters of somebody's home. Also the question of who gets to decide, now that six hundred people have discovered they need somebody to.
Why it keeps going
Every repair raises a question nobody out here has ever had to answer out loud, and Imelda keeps being the one standing closest when it gets asked.
Takeaway
Nowhere stays lawless for long. It only waits to see who gets handed the job.
