Synopsis
The way station at Pinto Wells burned on a Monday. What is left of it is one adobe wall, a fouled well, a dead mule, and six men who were not in the building at the time. A corporal, two teamsters, a cook, a preacher nobody sent for, and a prisoner who is still in irons because the corporal has not thought of a good enough reason to take them off. The nearest cover is a rock shelf half a mile off, across open ground, watched by forty men with time to spare. The road behind them carries four families a day who do not know any of this.

Six survivors of a burned stage station: a corporal, two teamsters, a Chinese cook, a preacher with opinions, and a prisoner still wearing the irons the corporal put on him.
What goes wrong
The well is fouled, the relief column is eleven days out, and the nearest cover is a rock shelf half a mile across open ground with forty men watching it.
What's at stake
Water for two days if they are careful and one if they are not. Behind them, a road with four families a day on it who do not know the station is gone.
Why it keeps going
Nobody can leave and nobody can be spared, so the six of them have to keep deciding, daily, who is worth what, in front of each other.
