About this title
Synopsis
Jonah Strand has been hauling junk across the belt for ten years. He owns half a tug and owes the rest of it. The job pays double: nudge a dead fuel hauler off a collision course with the Tamarack refinery ring. The hauler is cold and the manifest says empty. The moment he latches on, its thrusters fire. Someone is steering it. The ring is eleven hours away, four thousand people are sleeping on it, and the Chesapeake cannot let go.
Who this is about
Jonah Strand, thirty-two, flies the tug Chesapeake out of Ceres Yard, hauling dead satellites and drifting freight for anyone who pays on time.
What goes wrong
He latches onto a dead tanker that is losing orbit, and finds its guidance is awake and steering it toward the Tamarack refinery ring.
What's at stake
Four thousand workers sleep on the ring. Letting go of the hauler saves the tug and loses the ring. Holding it means burning the Chesapeake down to the frame.
Why it keeps going
Eleven hours of fuel, a hull that will not decouple, and something aboard the hauler that keeps correcting his burns.
Takeaway
A man who works for money can still decide what he will not trade it for.
