About this title
Synopsis
Silas Whitcomb has given his word to two governors and a judge that Amos Crane will hang. The train is climbing the steepest grade in Colorado and the engineer has just stopped answering the whistle. The gang is on the engine. The passengers are in the coaches. Crane smiles from the baggage car and tells Silas it is going to be a long night. Silas checks his revolver and says he has got time.
Who this is about
Silas Whitcomb is thirty-one, a Union Pacific detective and former cavalry scout who has never failed to deliver a prisoner alive.
What goes wrong
A killer named Amos Crane is in irons in the baggage car, and his gang has taken the engine of the same train three tunnels ahead.
What's at stake
Handing over the prisoner buys the passengers' lives and frees a murderer. Keeping him means a gunfight on a train with children aboard.
Why it keeps going
A moving train, a mountain grade, a prisoner who talks too much, a crew that will not take sides and one man with a revolver and his word.
Takeaway
A man who keeps his word is worth more than a man with a faster gun.
