Halflight

Synopsis

The contract is for annual resupply and it does not expire until 2061. The colony stopped answering in the ninth year of it. Nobody canceled anything, because canceling would have required somebody to write down what had happened, and nobody knew. So the run goes every year. Down, unload, up. Petra has flown it four times and has never once seen a light on. This year, coming in over the northern flats at eleven thousand meters, she can see the whole eastern quarter lit up like a town.

Who this is about

Petra crews a supply run that has been flown to a silent colony every year since it stopped answering, because nobody has canceled the contract.

What goes wrong

This year the lights are on.

What's at stake

Nine years of assumptions, and a ship carrying fuel for the return leg only.

Why it keeps going

Each episode one more part of the colony turns out to have been running the entire time.

Takeaway

Nobody checks the thing that has been safe to assume for nine years.
