About this title
Synopsis
Ruben Salas retired at thirty-four, on time, on his own terms, with his speech intact and enough money to open a gym. Five years of other men's sons since then, and he has been happy, which he says out loud sometimes to check that it is true. The insurance calls his daughter's operation elective. It is not elective. It costs forty-one thousand dollars, and Ruben has eleven, and the gym is worth about nine on a good day to a buyer who does not exist. On Thursday a promoter calls with one night, a man twelve years younger, and a purse of forty-five.
