Synopsis
Roy Deel has been driving other men away from other men's robberies for nineteen years and has never once appeared in a photograph, which he considers a career. He is, at the moment, forty miles short of where he needs to be. The station at the crossroads has two pumps and a kid who comes out to do the windshield without being asked. Halfway through the windshield, the kid says Roy's first name. Then he says he saw him in Wichita in the spring, and grins. There are men behind Roy, forty minutes back, who would consider this a solved problem. Roy has a shotgun under the seat still in its wrapping. The tank is still filling.
Who this is about
Roy Deel has driven for other people's robberies for nineteen years without once being photographed. He is very good at this. He is also, currently, out of gas.
What goes wrong
The kid working the pumps at a crossroads in west Kansas recognizes him, says so out loud, and is friendly about it, which is the worst thing that has happened all year.
What's at stake
Nineteen clean years end with one witness. The men forty minutes back will handle it for him if he lets them, and then he owns that too.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is another stop, another person who should not have seen him, and another chance to find out what he is actually unwilling to do.
