About this title
Synopsis
At Outpost Kestrel the glamour belongs to the pilots. Staff Sergeant Tyler Mace and five Marines own the gravel pad where they reload, and he has never had a helicopter wait more than ninety seconds. The road was supposed to be the safe part. Then a convoy burns at the bend and the only way in or out is air. The next aircraft is nine minutes out and needs full rockets and fuel. The next ridge is thirty Marines under fire. The point has six men, two trucks and one rule, which is that nothing on the pad ever stops.
Who this is about
Staff Sergeant Tyler Mace, twenty-seven, from Abilene, Texas, runs a six man arming point at Outpost Kestrel, where every attack helicopter in the valley comes to reload.
What goes wrong
An ambush cuts the only road, and the point is suddenly the one place the air support can rearm and the first place the enemy will come for.
What's at stake
If the point falls, thirty Marines on the next ridge lose their cover. If it holds, it holds with six men, two trucks and what is stacked on the pad.
Why it keeps going
Helicopters inbound every nine minutes, a pad that must stay clear, a stack of ordnance that cannot burn, and a ridge getting closer.
Takeaway
In a war, somebody has to be the reason the others can keep going.
