About this title
Synopsis
Ray Dunleavy knows every pipe in the aft compartment by touch, which is the only reason he is still working when the lights go out. Water is coming in at a depth where the sea does not forgive mistakes. The captain is forward and the phone is dead. Ray has ninety seconds, one wrench and a hatch that only closes one way.
Who this is about
Petty Officer Ray Dunleavy is thirty-three, a machinist's mate on a fast-attack submarine, a quiet man from Duluth who has never raised his voice in his life.
What goes wrong
A seawater line fails in the aft compartment on a deep dive. The boat is climbing, but not fast enough, and the water is rising faster than the pumps can move it.
What's at stake
Closing the hatch saves the boat and traps the men still aft. Leaving it open means the whole crew goes down together.
Why it keeps going
A flooding compartment, hot pipes and failing lights, a chain of command that can't be reached, and a crew that trusts him to be right.
Takeaway
Courage is mostly knowing the boat better than anyone else and not panicking.
