About this title
Synopsis
The Dayton Dukes have played the same eight Sundays for four years and lost most of them. They are a dentist, two cousins, a retired mailman and a quarterback named Brett Hallan, who sells floors. This year they somehow make the title game against the Brookside Bruisers, a team sponsored by the man who fired Brett and staffed with three real college players. They have six days. Brett has a playbook on a pizza box and a team that has just learned what a blitz is. It will not be pretty. It will be fun.
Who this is about
Brett Hallan, thirty-five, sells commercial flooring by day and plays quarterback by Sunday for the Dayton Dukes, a team whose best asset is a cooler.
What goes wrong
The Dukes face the Brookside Bruisers for the league title, a team sponsored by Brett's former boss and staffed by three actual college players.
What's at stake
Winning means a trophy, a rematch with the old boss and the end of a four year drought. Losing means the Dukes disband, and the cooler goes to the dentist.
Why it keeps going
Six days to practice, a roster of a dentist, two cousins and a retired mailman, and a playbook drawn on a pizza box.
Takeaway
It is a game played by grown men who would rather lose together than win alone.
