About this title
Synopsis
The boat is eleven days out and two hundred miles inside waters nobody has charted well. Lieutenant Marcus Dell has done his job quietly for two years and has never made a call the captain did not first approve. Then a depth charge puts the captain in the sick bay and a hairline crack in the pressure hull. The boat settles onto a ledge at three hundred feet while a convoy passes above. Forty men have air for thirty hours. The chief looks at Marcus. So does everyone else. The only person who can say what happens next is the youngest officer aboard.
Who this is about
Lieutenant Marcus Dell is twenty-nine, from Duluth, the junior officer aboard a forty-man diesel boat who has never given an order the captain did not approve first.
What goes wrong
A depth charge wounds the captain and cracks the pressure hull, and the boat settles on a ledge under a convoy that is searching for her.
What's at stake
Surfacing ends the mission and the crew. Staying down with a leaking hull means the batteries, the air and the nerve of forty men run out together.
Why it keeps going
Air for thirty hours, a leak that grows with every pass overhead, a convoy that must be sunk or avoided, and a crew learning whether to follow the new man.
Takeaway
Command arrives all at once, and it is mostly a decision to be the one who answers.
