Synopsis
The dust has grounded every aircraft in the valley except one. Danny Okafor-Reyes is sitting in it with the engines turning when the call comes in. The patrol is at the bottom of a canyon the manual says he should not enter. The wounded have maybe an hour. Danny tells his crew chief to watch the left rotor, because he is going to be using the walls for reference.
Who this is about
Warrant Officer Danny Okafor-Reyes is twenty-nine, a medevac pilot with the Army, and the youngest aircraft commander in his company.
What goes wrong
A patrol is trapped at the bottom of a narrow canyon with wounded aboard, and every other helicopter is grounded by dust. Command says the landing zone is too small.
What's at stake
The rotor clears the canyon walls by a few feet. Wait for the weather and the wounded do not last. Go in and he may lose the aircraft and the crew with it.
Why it keeps going
One helicopter, a crew chief, a flight medic, a canyon that narrows with every hundred yards and an hour of light.
