About this title
Synopsis
Eli Brandt keeps Tail 404 flying with safety wire, spare parts begged from other crews, and a feel for its vibrations that no manual covers. He is twenty-six and has not had a night off in nine days. A dust storm closes over the Harlan Ridge bowl at dusk, with thirty-one soldiers pinned inside it. The three newer helicopters on the base are grounded or have turned back. Tail 404 is the last aircraft with rotors and a crew willing to try. The landing zone is the size of a parking lot. The ground time is forty seconds. The rotor has been shaking since Tuesday, and Eli knows exactly why.
Who this is about
Eli Brandt is a twenty-six year old crew chief from Fresno who has kept one battered transport helicopter flying through two deployments and trusts its sounds more than the weather report.
What goes wrong
A dust storm closes over a ridgeline bowl with a platoon pinned inside it, and the three newer aircraft on the base are grounded or have turned back.
What's at stake
Landing risks the last aircraft on the base and a crew of four. Staying on the ramp means thirty-one soldiers spend the night with half their ammunition.
Why it keeps going
A landing zone the size of a parking lot, forty seconds allowed on the ground, a rotor that has shaken since Tuesday, and a radio getting quieter every minute.
