About this title
Synopsis
The territory keeps one ledger of its hangings. Name, date, charge, signing judge. Marshal Owen Bray has kept it for nine years and it holds forty-one entries, all in his handwriting. He is not a hard man about it. He writes each one down, he sends word to the family when there is a family, and he does not attend if he can help it. In November there is a forty-second entry. His own name, a date in March, and a hand he has been reading on court orders since the day he took the office. He does not tear the page out.
Who this is about
Marshal Owen Bray keeps the execution ledger for the territory. Name, date, charge, and the judge who signed. Forty-one entries in nine years, all of them in his own hand.
What goes wrong
There is a forty-second entry he did not write. It carries his name, a date four months out, and handwriting he has been reading on court orders for nine years.
What's at stake
If the judge means it, Bray has four months. If the judge is warning him, then forty-one of those entries need reading again, and Bray wrote every one of them.
Why it keeps going
He goes back through the ledger one execution at a time, and the territory is small enough that most of the families are still living where he left them.
Takeaway
A man who keeps the record is the last one to read it.
