Synopsis
The town at the bottom of the valley will not sell them flour. This is not stated as policy anywhere. It is simply that the store is closing whenever they ride in, and has been for four months, and everybody has agreed not to discuss it. Sergeant Elias Pike has twelve men of the Tenth and orders to hold the ford above that town for as long as it takes. On the ninth of the month somebody comes across the river in the dark, and the people who will not sell them flour are downstream of it.
