About this title
Synopsis
They bring the ships in at high tide and run them onto the flats, and two hundred men take them apart with torches, working inward from the bow until nothing is left but a stain on the sand. Cal Winters has been cutting for nine years. At night, in the emptied belly of whatever is beached, men pay a dollar to watch him fight, and he has never been carried out. It is the only thing anybody says about him. The yard belongs to a man named Priest, who also owns the fights and the bunkhouses. In October, for the first time, Priest puts his money on the other man, and comes to the sand to tell Cal himself.
Who this is about
Cal Winters cuts dead ships apart for scrap on the Brownsville flats, eleven hours a day inside hulls that were built to be somewhere else. At night he fights in them.
What goes wrong
The man who owns the yard, and the fights, and the housing the crews sleep in, puts money against him for the first time and lets him know it.
What's at stake
Going down buys a season of work for two hundred men who cut beside him. Staying up costs them the yard, and costs him the only thing he has never sold.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is another ship coming in to be taken apart, and another night of deciding how much of himself the men around him are worth.
