Synopsis
Hank Tolliver has never named his mech, because naming things is for people who plan to keep them. He has a countdown on his visor and a runaway carrier in his windshield. The colony is asleep. Command is arguing. The thruster pack has four burns left in it. Hank selects the shoving arms and tells the machine he is sorry.
Who this is about
Hank Tolliver is thirty-five, a veteran breaker-class mech pilot who cuts ore out of asteroid faces for a living and has outlasted three owners of his rig.
What goes wrong
An ore carrier's guidance fails and puts it on a collision course with the colony's main habitat. The auto-pilot cannot be reached. Only a manual intercept can turn it.
What's at stake
The only machine strong enough to shove a ship that size is his, and the stress will tear it apart. A failed push means two thousand people on the habitat.
Why it keeps going
A hundred-ton work mech, a failing thruster pack, a countdown measured in minutes and a long, cold space between him and the carrier.
