Synopsis
The valley was cleared six weeks ago. The briefing says so, the map says so, and the four men on the patrol have no particular reason to doubt either of them. On the second morning Corporal Reyes puts up his glasses and finds smoke. Not a fire. A chimney, drawing properly, the way a chimney draws when somebody has been feeding it since dawn. There is a family living in a valley that officially does not contain one, and the patrol's orders have no line on them for what happens next.
