About this title
Synopsis
The valley was cleared six weeks ago. The briefing says so, the map says so, and the four men on the patrol have no particular reason to doubt either of them. On the second morning Corporal Reyes puts up his glasses and finds smoke. Not a fire. A chimney, drawing properly, the way a chimney draws when somebody has been feeding it since dawn. There is a family living in a valley that officially does not contain one, and the patrol's orders have no line on them for what happens next.
Who this is about
A four-man patrol is sent through a valley their briefing, their map and their orders all describe as empty.
What goes wrong
On the second morning one of them finds smoke. Not a fire. A chimney, drawing properly, the way one draws when somebody has been feeding it since dawn.
What's at stake
Getting them out means admitting they were left, and the patrol's orders have no line for that.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is one more mile out and one more radio call that does not return the answer they need.
Takeaway
An official record of an empty place is the easiest thing in the world to produce.
