Synopsis
The ridge is marked empty. Division says empty. The reconnaissance photographs say empty, and Sergeant Ellis Crowder takes six men up the north face in the dark on that word. It is not empty. By first light the ridge belongs to them, which is the good news entire. Three of the six cannot stand. Crowder counts the men who can walk, counts the men who cannot, and the arithmetic does not come out. Every man on that ridge can do the same arithmetic. None of them says it. Relief is eleven hours out, the weather is closing, and Crowder has until dark to decide out loud, in front of them, what the number is.
Who this is about
Sergeant Ellis Crowder runs a six-man reconnaissance patrol in the Korean winter of 1951. Every man in it is nineteen or twenty except Crowder himself, and he is twenty-four.
What goes wrong
The ridge the map calls empty holds a reinforced company. The patrol takes it anyway, and by the time it is theirs, three of the six cannot walk.
What's at stake
Two litters need four carriers. Crowder has three men standing. The arithmetic is public, everyone on the ridge can do it, and nobody will say it out loud.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is another night on the ridge, another decision made in front of the men it will be made about, and another morning the arithmetic gets worse.
